FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX

Leave me alone now
Let me be
By myself
It’s all up to you
I’ve done my part, I’ve helped you
So leave me alone
I’ve changed your life
I’ve captured your dragon
And watched you kill it
And seen you tumble from the sky
I’ve seen your body hit the ground
I’ve held you while you healed your broken bones
I’ve watched you gather strength from the sun
I’ve seen you grow
I’ve watched you care
I’ve seen you change.

You’ve become a beautiful bird
Flying, gliding up from your own ashes
Your feathers singed and damaged,
Your watery eyes smarting from the putrid smoke,
Your flight awkward and unsure
But strong and powerful.
You’re so beautiful.
Soon it will be so easy.

Now the time has come
To leave me alone
With my own dust
And my own fire
And my own pain, with my own past
Do I really care?
Did I really expect perfection?
Should I have expected ease?
Should I have wanted
What I should have known
Doesn’t belong to me?
Is it too much to ask
For my turn?
