My mind tends to feel like toast
As if my brain has left for the coast
It’s calling to my body now
But I’m forced to keep my workman’s vow
Or else I would surely leap to my feet
And hit the road, sail down the street
To that place where ocean breezes blow
Taking my time, going deliciously slow
As I shuffle through rocks and sands onshore
I feel my soul become whole once more.
As I shield my eyes and stare out to sea
A whale leaps through the air just for me,
And clouds cover the sun to make the air soft
While sand pipers strut and gulls soar aloft
Memories of yesterday are slipping away
While a calm heart and peace show me the way
Through strands of seaweed and leftover foam
I come to believe this place is my heart’s home.
Then I will never get lost in the snow
I will never be scorched by the sun
And when my vacation is finally done
I’ll be renewed for a little while at least
And given the strength to fight off the beast,
And maybe a seashell or two to remember the sea
Will hide in my suitcase and come home with me.
Once home, I will curl up with a book and my cat
Who I feed too well and is now growing fat.
But the backdrop of his purr goes good with the book
As we drift off to sleep in our quiet little nook
And evening falls and stars show their faces
And Jehovah smiles on the earth in his tender graces
While I dream of the sounds of the waves rushing in
And my kitty’s face twitches into a cute little grin
I know all is well and it’s a beautiful sight
And as the town’s lights flicker out,
I whisper, “Good night, good night.”
