OK, technically, it’s been there all along. The artist has been writing more about his political and social views for quite some time, but lately, there’s been a return to the evil comic strip of sex and violence and incredibly morbid humor. So far it’s only been a couple of weeks…I hope he keeps it up, and I hope he has as much fun writing it as I have reading it. : ) I’ve added the link to my list of comics on the bottom right.

A Room with a View

Filed under: General — admin on Sunday, November 20, 2005 @ 11:33 am

In all the excitement of last night I forgot to tell you the good news.

We signed an application for an awesome apartment last night. It’s not right in Capitol Hill like we were hoping, but it’s still not very far from it. It’s a fourth story in a building with thirty some apartments. It has a locked front door so that people have to push the button to talk to you. (I love those. Intercoms are cool.)

It has one bedroom, hardwood floors, lots of big windows….and get this….a big picture window in the living room with a view of Lake Union and the entire downtown Seattle area behind it! The rooms aren’t square and boxy, but each room has different angles and there are lots of triangle shapes. (I find that very cozy. I found out from my psychology major friend Cady that there’s actually a scientific explanation for that. But I won’t get into it now.) There’s also a nice storage area in the basement. Laundry on premises, and room for a portable dishwasher to be wheeled in there. ;) (The kitchen is really well-lit too, with lots of cupboards and a good amount of counter space.) The landlady said that on the 4th of July they show the fireworks over Lake Union, and the place that they do it from is on the side of the lake near our window, so there’s a spectacular view. So, 4th of July party at our house!

Anyway. We filled out the application last night, and we’re running down there around noon to put a hold on it. (We would have last night, but we didn’t have a checkbook with us.) There’s a good chance we’ll get it. We had called the lady this morning and she said she didn’t have anything with a view available, and then she called us a few hours later because someone had backed out of their lease and it was now available. So we’re pretty much the only people who know about it. ;) It’s well within our price range…even a couple hundred dollars lower than what our maximum amount that we wanted to pay was.

P.S. We find out Thursday or Friday whether we actually are accepted for the apartment. I’ll let you know. ;) If it’s a go, then the move date is actually December 17. : )

Dan and the Wine Bottle of Malevolence

Filed under: General — admin on @ 2:12 am

Wow, this was a really surreal evening.

So we go over to my friend Cady’s apartment. She’s having a dinner party with her roommate and their college friends. It was a fairly large and very friendly crowd, and people were starting to show up so the food was put out and the wine was being opened.

So Dan is struggling with a particularly stubborn cork, holding the bottle with one hand and pulling on the cork with his other. What ended up happening is he broke the bottleneck off the wine bottle! He stood there laughing at it and someone asked if his shirt was ripped…oh yeah it was…they asked if he was cut…oh yeah he was! Cady quick grabbed him a washcloth and told him he needed stitches. Dan, being very much a “just a fleshwound” person, insisted he didn’t need stitches, but the rest of us were pretty sure. :o

So, we dragged him to the hospital. It was a very strange hospital which seemed to have a hidden emergency room, but we found it eventually. We got a lot of good laughs at Dan’s politeness, holding doors open for the rest of us with his bloody hand, apologizing to the hospital personnel for dripping blood on their floor.

In the end, he got seven or eight staples in his stomach. It wasn’t a very deep cut, just barely below the subdermis. (sp?) Still deep enough that you could see fatty tissue (and it was so cute. Aww.) It was about two inches long I think. He had a couple of smaller cuts on his hand that were nothing to speak of.

We got through the evening with a good sense of humor and I think the most stressed-out out of all of us was Cady. I felt so bad for her…she’d been planning this party for weeks and was so afraid that it was going to turn out to be a disaster. It actually went great other than the emergency excursion…we ended up going back to the party (although Dan was at first worried about how he’d look with drops of blood on his pants) and eating and having another glass of wine (no one will let him touch a wine bottle for a while ;)) and enjoying the rest of our evening.

On a personal note, for someone with hemophobia, I handled it pretty well. Of course, it’s slightly different when it’s someone else’s blood. But for the first time I decided I wanted to watch everything they did. They gave him a tetanus shot first, I watched the doctor clean the cut out, I watched her poke a little needle around his cut to deaden it, and I watched her close it with staples. I had lots of sympathy pains and by the end I was shaking, but I didn’t pass out or get woozy. : ) Go, me.

So everyone says Dan’s a badass now, for breaking a wine bottle with his bare hands. He just says it was a very shittily made bottle. And now he’s got a funny story to tell.

Right now he’s changing the tape on his gauze and going to bed. It wasn’t a scary evening, but it was a bit draining. So to speak. ;)

You scored as Serenity (from Firefly). You like to live your own way and do not enjoy when anyone but a friend tries to tell you that you should do different. Now if only the Reavers would quit trying to skin you.
